About the band:

Picture
The Boxted Methodist Silver Band is a traditional brass band based in Boxted, Colchester.

With a strong attachment to Boxted Methodist Chapel, the Band has mixed membership of both church-goers and non church-goers who all enjoy meeting together to make music.

We meet on Wednesday evenings to rehearse a mixture of hymns, brass band favourites, music from film and television, songs from the shows and some new works. The Band is very active, playing in regular church services, fetes, shows, concerts and other community and charity events in Colchester and surrounding villages. You can see pictures of performances and social events in our gallery. You can also view our Facebook group if you are a member of Facebook.

Our ages range from 17 years old to over 80, with length of service varying from new faces who have joined in the past couple of months to those who have been members for a lifetime.

We are always looking for more musicians to come and share our enjoyment of playing together. Our website has information on vacancies and our training band.

Our Conductor - Victoria Steinitz

Already an active young musician in Colchester, Victoria joined BMSB in 1996, having learnt to play tenor horn in the training band. Rehearsals and engagements had to slot in around homework, piano and bassoon practice, tree-climbing, brownies, guides and just about everything else that formed part of ‘village life’.

Victoria was a committed member of the Band until going to study music at the University of Surrey, during which she frequently reappeared as a guest player, occasionally venturing up to the flugelhorn and cornet sections. Her four-year course offered arts administration and management alongside specialisms in performance and conducting; ideal training for a bassoonist who went on to manage the London Symphony Orchestra’s education centre and conduct a brass band in her ‘spare’ time.

Orchestral musicianship was always an interest and a pleasure. Alongside ensembles
at school and college, Victoria played in the Colne Valley Youth Orchestra, Essex Young People’s Orchestra and Essex Youth Orchestra, with tours to Canada and the United States, Sweden, Estonia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Holland and Italy.

Victoria has played with several semi-professional, London-based groups, including Orchestra Tamesa and the Orchestra of the City, and is regularly booked for choral performances in Essex and Surrey. As a founder member of the UBS Orchestra – an initiative led by the LSO – she has also performed at LSO St Luke’s and the Barbican.
